Joao Madail (Lisbon, 1957), a character, even before craftsman, a versatile and whimsical, approaches to the manufacture of pipes in recent years, beginning its production around 2011.
Since ever fond of slow smoking, in particular mixtures with latakja, as well as expert in woodworking, during a slow smoke race assists a demonstration of a renowned Portuguese pipmaker living in Denmark: Joao Reis.
On this occasion: Joao Madail is convinced, and it says in public, which can do a similar level pipe. And so the adventure begins: the first pipes are implemented with the help of the same Joao Reis who also provides the raw material, but in a very short time Madal stands with his own feet and, since he is retired, he devoted himself with passion and commitment to the realization of excellent pipes, cured in shape and finishes.
Joao uses mainly Italian and Greek briars, but recently began working even the Portuguese. The particularity in the choice of the wood lies in the fact that each piece is surveyed for arrival date and weighed periodically: when after three weighings the weight is not changed, then the briar is ready to be machined.
Today, Joao Madal produces about a hundred pipes per year, smooth and rusticated, and marchia “Sorpius”, his zodiac sign, or “Joao Madal”, marking reserved for pieces with particularly blaze briar.
